The DIY and Gardening Products (ABJ) Sector

What is it?

At the crossroads of environmental policy and circularity, the February 10, 2020 law established an extended producer responsibility scheme for DIY and gardening equipment, called ABJ. Enacted on January 1, 2022, this initiative prioritizes reuse and repair, in collaboration with social economy stakeholders. Distributors play a key role in collecting used products, and recycling is available for irreparable items. The September 22, 2021 decree details the scope of this EPR scheme, providing concrete measures for improving waste management and circularity

Products Covered

Valobat is government-approved for the following categories of the DIY EPR scheme:

Category 3 (DIY equipment)*
Category 4 (Garden maintenance products and equipment)*
Category 1 (Painter’s tools) is not covered by Valobat.
Category 2 (Thermal motorized machines) is not covered by Valobat.

* other than painter’s tools and thermal motorized machines and equipment, as established by Decree No. 2021-1213 of September 22, 2021 – art.4.
